Yes! We know the way to Nolay
June 15th
Saturdays in Beaune there is a fantastic Market but the problem is that our parking garage fills up and no one seems to leave for the entire day. Because we leave our bikes in the car covered in our dark bike bags we need to have a spot in the secure garage overnight. If we drive away on a Saturday it is possible we won't find a spot when we return. Taking all of this into account we decided to take the train from Beaune down to Chagny and ride back from there. It's about a 50km ride in total including a ride up and back to Nolay along a rail trail. The trail is all uphill for 8.8km but of course the positive is that it's all downhill on the way back. We love to stop in the town square in Santenay for coffee and people watching. There is a beautiful fountain there which adds to the ambiance.

Many of the restaurants are closed on Sundays so we booked the Caveau des Arches for Jay's Father's Day dinner on Saturday. It's always fun to climb down into a cave for dinner, nes pas? The waiter was very intense ordering his underlings around with a snap of his fingers so needless to say the service was excellent. The meal was a very traditional prix fixe 3 course menu with an amuse-bouche served at the outset of Burgundian goucheres (cream puffs flavored with cheese in this instance, but you can also do them with herbs or bacon, etc.) The starters of jambon persille, escargot and oeufs en meurette were typical dishes in burgundy but not sure we have seen them elsewhere in France. Jay's chicken with epoisses sauce and my boeuf bourguignon were delicious as was the frozen desert served in a puddle of limoncello we think. A most satisfiying evening for sure!
