Off to the Jura
June 10th
This will be a picture loaded blog post...On our way to visit a friend in the Jura we stopped at his recommended restaurant in the hilltop Commune of Chateau Chalon. We arrived early and walked through the village. It was so very picturesque that I took way too many photos...I just couldn't stop!
We stopped for coffee before heading into the restaurant for lunch at a cute little place with a lovely patio.
Our lunch of several courses was incredible as the photos below will show. We both tried different wines from the region and agreed they are not ones we would try again. They reminded us of the sherry tasting wine of Sauternes which we had in Langon near Bordeaux.

The Jura mountains run along part of the French-Swiss border and cover most of the Franche-Comté region in eastern France and go as far south as the Rhone-Alps. Our friend Daniel Grand was born in the small village of Gigny-sur-Suran. He still owns his grandfather's house in the village but has remodeled and modernized the interior. We walked around to see where he went to school and the church that he attended. He must have been quite an imp as he showed us his name carved into the old school desk and his initials scratched into one of the massive pillars inside of the church. Since we had a large lunch earlier we made a simple salad and sat on the patio enjoying the evening with some good red wine from other regions in France.
