Hills, Cow Paths and Stinging Nettles
August 30th
That just about sums it up! The bike trail from Nolay going south was great for about 5 kilometers and then we crossed a highway, rode up a hill and made a right hand turn, still following the bike trail signs. As we climbed even higher the road turned into a rocky cow path with the cows staring at us as we rode by. I'm sure they were mocking us! Eventually the trail joined the D136 road and at that point we were hungry and decided to stop for lunch. No picnic table here, just a guard rail and some stinging nettles. We recently discovered that on our iPhone photos we can click on the little i at the bottom and it tells you the name of the plant. It was a good thing to know before we sat down for our lunch in a field of stinging nettles! We continued on to the town of Saisy and after going down a long hill we discovered the traffic-free trail we had been looking for. At that point we had come down a long hill and since Jay doesn't have a motor we opted to turn around and head back to Nolay. Now that we know the starting point of the trail we will return to fight another day. On our return we decided to skip the gravel cow path and just continue on the D136 to nearby Viecourt where there was a sign for Epertully and Nolay so we turned onto the D145 and followed signs to Nolay. We took a left hand turn in Epertully and found our way back to the original triail. I think we should notify the trail organization and tell them to reroute this trail. Our return was much easier but doesn't make as good a story I guess. The ride was pretty and it was actually fun doing a little orienteering for a change.
