When It's Hot, It's Hot
August 22nd
The weather here in Beaune has been unusually hot for this time of year. Jay looked up the averages and it's supposed to be in the mid to perhaps upper 70s not low to mid 90s. We have been getting up early to ride and getting back to our apartment for lunch but today we took the day off because Jay was up in the middle of the night with kidney stone pain. Luckily he has had this before so brings along his arsenal of drugs to combat the problem. He thinks he passed the stone since the pain subsided but he was too tired and drained to ride so it turned out to be Laundry Day. We have a great washer in the apartment but no dryer so I did two quick loads and was off to the Laverie du Centre by 10am to do the drying. We are only a 4 minute walk to the laundromat so I threw in the clothes for 20 minutes (4 Euros) and walked down to the little Casino grocery to pick up some items we needed, walked back to the apartment to drop them off and was back to pick up my clothes as the dryer stopped. It's very efficient city living.
After spending the day catching up with my blogging and other indoor activities we were ready to get out. We went to our favorite bar for an aperitif because we discovered they have misters to cool their customers off, probably so they stick around for more drinks. We "bonjured" our waiter who I think now recognizes us after three visits, and ordered a 50cl beer for Jay and a coupe de cremant for moi. Just as we were getting settled and enjoying our drinks, and the croissant bread sticks they serve, the misters quit. 😲 We managed to survive because the sun had gone behind the buildings but it was mighty warm I have to say!
To end our day we had made reservations at a favorite restaurant here, Le Bacchus. It's a small intimate space which is air-conditioned thank goodness. The owner is a lovely woman who is the sole waiter, cashier and bar tender for the 8 tables. We ordered a nice Chardonnay from the area and we each had an appetizer. Jay ordered the boeuf bourguignon and I ordered the dorade however she pointed to the blackboard that said they were out of dorade and asked if I still wanted fish. I said "oui" and she quickly rattled off something and I nodded. To my surprise when my plat came it was a seared tuna steak on a bed of bruschetta style tomatoes - boy was it delicious! I was so excited I forgot to take a picture. Maybe I will go back and order it again?
