Our Daily Life in Beaune

August 5th

Since we will be spending the next month in Beaune I won't be posting on a daily basis as we will be doing much of the same each day...up in the morning for a quick breakfast and off for a bike ride until after lunch, usually sandwiches from a boulangerie while on the bike trail. We'll return to our nicely air-conditioned apartment for some R&R before dinner.  Throw in  some sight-seeing on days we don't bike, a laundry day here and there, and maybe a little shopping in the square to mention a few other activities.  We continue to work on our French, read a bit and just enjoy being here.  As they like to say, "C'est la vie!"

There are an abundance of great restaurants here in Beaune which is probably why I at least like it so much.  Tonight we chose the Bistro 8 Clos which has 5 star reviews and a Michelin trained chef they claim.  It did not disappoint!!  Jay ordered the prix fixe menu that started with Ouefs en Murette (eggs poached in a Chardonnay sauce) which is a traditional dish served in Burgundy but usually done with Pinot Noir.  This was fabulous and I'm glad we are here for an extended stay so I can go back to order that dish.  Next he had a very upscale version of Beef Burgundy and I had the trout.  Both were extraordinary!  To finish off our meal we shared the creme brûlée that was included on Jay's menu.  We sat by a delightful french couple from Beaune who spoke no english but we managed to have occasional bits of conversation.  They ordered a wonderful bottle of Pinot Noir that they shared with us toward the end of the evening.  As we left and thanked them they said, "a bientot" which means "see you soon."  I love these travel experiences!
