Barges and Bikes

August 7th

Our second day on the bikes we retraced another of our favorite rides in Burgundy along the Canal du Centre.  We actually did a barge trip on this canal several years ago and it's always fun to relived those great memories. There are not many towns on this section from Chagny to Chalon-sur-Soane so we rode the 40km faster than we had planned.  The town of Fragnes has picnic tables along the canal where we stopped for our lunch and afterward found a great little patisserie for un cafe.  The coffee was only 1 Euro 10 (compared to the 5 Euros in Paris) and the ladies in the bakery were so sweet and friendly we will definitely visit them again!

It can be hard to find a restaurant open on Sundays so we returned to La Monge around the corner.  We had a bit of time before dinner so went to our favorite bar in the main square for an aperitif.  Jay had the 50cl Belgian beer, Leffe and I chose the Cremant de Bourgogne, a tasty bubbly.  Sitting next to us were two gentlemen from Amsterdam who were highly entertaining.  They were traveling up from the south of France so had some tips about restaurants for us.

We were a few minutes late to dinner but it didn't seem to be a problem.  Jay decided on the set menu and started with gazpacho, followed by fish and chips and ice cream for dessert.  I opted for a small green salad and chicken in a delicious wine sauce.  This is a really great restaurant and the prices are very reasonable.  This will be our go to place I'm sure!
