Biking in Burgundy

August 9th and 10th

There are many traffic free biking trails all over France and we love the trails here in Burgundy. There are many maps and books that show the trails and routes but we found a website that really has all the others beat...francevelotourisme.com!  It shows trail distances, elevations and interesting sites along the way.  Over the last two days we did two different rides, Beaune to Dijon and the Greenway out of Chalon-sur-Soane.

The first ride took us up through the vineyards north of Beaune and was quite breathtaking although it was mostly on small roads not designated bike paths.  The signage was easy to follow but the hills got to us (me...as my motor was going out due to a charging mishap) so we turned around at Nuit-Saint-Georges and took the train back to Beaune.  Before bailing on the ride however we rode by the Aloxe Corton Winery which has a beautiful chateau and we plan to go back for some wine tasting soon!

The second ride was from a suburb of Chalon, Saint Remy.  There are signs to the park lot for the trail (the Voie Verte) so we had an easy time finding where to start.  We biked along a traffic free and paved route for about 28km and stopped at a park along the path, at Saint-Gengoux-le-National, to have our lunch.  Returning was a little easier with the incline mostly going  downward and we completed our 56km ride in about 5 hours with stops for water, lunch and coffee.  A great day but boy does my bottom need a rest!
